You get swept up by the serious plot line, fall in love with the 'Trekkie' references and the general whimsy of the whole story.Īnd here's my 'but'. Kevin and Connor are beautifully written. The story is solid, not the usual lacklustre plots we usually get.

Maxfield's books and was on track to give this a five star review. Sorry, but the promise of this one just not realised.

Alarm bells anyone? As for the murderer, as soon as his character appeared it was obvious he did it. Ok, was speed-reading by this point, but Connor never seemed to apologise for this & Kevin blamed himself. Kevin hadn't seen him for 6 years & his father had a go at him for staying away! Really? If his father didn't mean it, as he claimed, why didn't he reach out & apologise? Instead he drags Kevin off, by the ear.! Then there was the Connor hitting Kevin incident. He called his child an abomination & accused him of killing of his mother & then had the audacity to blame Kevin for staying away! The rest of the family (& Connor) were as bad here. Sorry, but slight spoilers to follow: One of the biggest issues was with Kevin's father, 'Himself' (stupid name). There were a number of typos (breath when breathe was meant, just one example) & there were too many points where whole chunks of text had to be re-read to get the sense of what was being written.

This book had real promise, but there were some serious points that caused this reader to take issue with the entire book.
